How To EQ Mix Like A Professional DJ

Executing an EQ mix is fairly easy and not as complicated as people think it is. But how you execute the EQ mix will determine how good of a DJ you are. Anyone can EQ mix, but not everyone can do it correctly.

What you need to understand when it comes to EQ mixing. You have 3 parameters. High, Mid, and Lows. Some mixers like the Allen & Heath Xone 96 includes a 4 band which are the following: High, High-Mid, Low-Mid, and Lows. We will focus on a 3 band EQ mixer such as the DJM 900 Nexus 2, which is what most clubs are equipped with. The highs contain all the frequencies for things like Cymbals, Hi-Hats, Shakers, etc…. The Mid frequencies are sounds such as vocals and melodies. The Low parameter contains the kick drum and the bass instruments as well as any sound falling in the lower section of the audio spectrum. Now, you want to mix another track in with EQ mixing I’m going to go ahead and assume that you know how to beat match already. Once you have beat matched and before you put the fader up on the other track a good rule of thumb is to zero out the lows, put the mids.

Honestly, to master EQ mixing/blending you need to practice it and of course know your music like the back of your hand.
